Allgaier Rallies From Late-Race Penalty to a Top-10 Finish at Charlotte
CONCORD, N.C. (May 25, 2013) - A sunny and breezy weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway (CMS) began on Thursday with two practice sessions. After several race runs and a mock qualifying run in the first practice session, the No. 31 BRANDT Chevrolet Camaro finished 12th on the practice chart. Allgaier and the No. 31 BRANDT Camaro, along with 20 other competitors, sat out the final practice session on Thursday evening. After no track activity on Friday, Allgaier was next on the track Saturday morning for qualifying. Allgaier went out 34th of 45 cars, and qualified 14th for the HISTORY 300. He completed all 200 laps of racing and brought his No. 31 BRANDT Chevrolet Camaro home in the seventh position.
The green flag waved shortly after 3 p.m. at CMS and Allgaier started in the 14th position. By lap 40, Allgaier was in the 12th position when the first caution flag of the race waved. Crew chief Scott Zipadelli made the call for Allgaier to bring the No. 31 BRANDT Chevy down pit road for two cans of Sunoco fuel and four fresh Goodyear tires. After a great pit stop by the BRANDT pit crew, Allgaier restarted in the 10th position. The green flag waved at lap 45 and the caution was quickly out again at lap 47 for an accident on the frontstretch. Zipadelli called for Allgaier to stay out on the track and he restarted in the 11th position. On lap 55, Allgaier moved to the 12th position and remained there until the third caution of the day at lap 88. Under the caution, Allgaier visited pit road for tires, fuel and adjustments, restarting in the 12th position.
The field began green-flag pit stops at lap 141, and Zipdaelli called Allgaier down pit road under green at lap 145 for tires, fuel and adjustments. Unfortunately, Allgaier was assessed a speeding penalty when entering pit road, which resulted in a pass-thru penalty all while under the green flag. It wasn't long before the fourth caution of the race came out at lap 154, but Allgaier remained one lap down. When the fifth caution flew at lap 166, Allgaier was the beneficiary of the free pass and was put back on the lead lap. He restarted in the 19th position when the green flag flew at lap 173. Allgaier had worked his way up to 16th when the sixth caution came out at lap 179. After a couple of competitors came down pit road, Allgaier moved into 14th for the restart at lap 184.
The seventh and final caution of the day came out at lap 185 for an accident on the backstretch. Allgaier and the No. 31 BRANDT Chevrolet Camaro stayed out on the track and restarted in the 12th position on lap 188. Once under the green flag, Allgaier powered his way through the field for the remaining 12 laps and brought his No. 31 BRANDT Chevrolet Camaro home in the seventh position. The HISTORY 300 was Allgaier's seventh top-10 finish in 10 races this season. With today's top-10 finish, Allgaier moved up one position to third in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Driver Point Standings.
"We ended the day with a good finish at Charlotte [Motor Speedway]," said Allgaier. "Unfortunately, I got us a speeding penalty late in the race, which cost us a lot of track position. However, with all of the hard work by my crew chief and team, we were able to come back to a seventh-place finish. Overall, we were able to overcome adversity and finish in the top-10, along with moving up one position in points, so it was a good day."
The NASCAR Nationwide Series heads to Dover International Speedway next week for the 5-Hour Energy 200 on Saturday, June 1.
